1.1.2 Read Classified Ads

Check available sources, including club newsletters, ILCA publications, club and ILCA web sites, and all Lightning owners you know.

I followed the ads on the ILCA website (http://www.lightningclass.org), and in our Fleet 50 emails, as well as postings on the bulletin board at the Washington Sailing Marina (http://www.guestservices.com/wsm).  The notice that led to the boat I acquired was an email message from our Lightning Fleet Captain to all Fleet 50 skippers and crew, discussing the availability of a used Lightning, needing some work, good for cruising but not necessarily for racing, and available for a very reasonable price.

Lightning 10745                                                                                                    6/12/00

Doc Hulburt, an old Fleet 50 skipper, wants to find a home for his Lightning.  He is selling his country home north of Manassas and moving to Cape Cod.  He is leaving on June 28th so time is short.  He didn’t name a price, but I think he is mainly looking for a home for her and some spending money.  Call me and I’ll give you his phone number.

This boat is a day sailor, not a racer.  It was built by Helms.  It has a fiberglass hull, wood seats, and trim.  It has a metal mast that has the same squarish shape as the old wooden masts.  The centerboard is iron. He has had the boat stored in a shed for the last 14 years.  It has a fair suit of sails including a good jib.  The trailer needs one weld but is in good enough shape to get the boat home.
