Arrange for Survey
Arrange to have an expert in evaluating boat conditions to accompany you on the second visit (Note -- if boat will be insured, the insurance company will want a Marine Survey conducted -- by a registered marine surveyor --).
I
never considered hiring a marine surveyor, nor bringing along a knowledgeable
third party to help evaluate the boat.
Had there been more money involved in the transaction, it would have
been prudent, but in this case it worked out OK. My insurance company, however, was aghast that I would consider
purchasing a used boat without doing a survey, and indicated that they would
not write property casualty coverage without one.
