3.1.2 Acquire Vehicle (if necessary)

Your current vehicle may already be capable, but, if not, go purchase one.

My vehicle owner’s manual said that the manufacturer could not recommend towing a trailer with that car (an 88 Subaru 4WD GL Wagon), but at the 2000 Potomac Cup there were teams that had towed Lightning sailboats long distances (from Connecticut, and from Ohio) with their Subaru wagons, and they said their vehicles worked fine for towing that kind of load.  Furthermore, U-Haul was willing to install a hitch kit on my Subaru and let me tow a U-haul trailer with it, so I concluded that my vehicle would be fine for towing, especially considering that I didn’t plan on going very far with the boat.  The longest trips I have made so far have been about 40 miles each, and the vehicle has performed well on those occasions.
